SOPs and process design
Standard operating procedures that people follow because they are short and clear.
The situation: Work depends on a few experienced people, and quality changes when they are away.
An SOP that nobody reads is a compliance document, not a system. The ones that work are short, written in the language of the people who use them, and tied to the forms and screens they already use.
Where it usually goes wrong
- SOPs are drafted by someone who does not do the work, and so do not match reality.
- A single thick manual is written once and never updated.
- There is no owner for each process, so exceptions are escalated to the promoter by default.
How we work
We interview and observe the people doing the work, draft the SOP with them, test it on a live cycle, and then finalise. Each SOP gets an owner and a review date. Where it helps, we produce versions in Gujarati or Hindi for shop-floor and stores staff.
